Nazareth University won its second consecutive Empire 8 Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship, holding off Utica University to win the 2024 team title from the Polisseni Track and Field Complex on the Campus of St. John Fisher University on May 3-4. The Golden Flyers finished with 207 team points, 34 ahead of the Pioneers. Host St. John Fisher placed third with 149 points.
The Golden Flyers had eight individuals/relay teams win events and had several student-athletes earn personal records over the two-day meet.
Utica junior sprinter Mackenzie Mix was named 2024 Empire 8 Outdoor Track Athlete of the Meet after sweeping all three sprint events and leading the Pioneers to runner-up honors in a pair of relays. Mix took the 100-meters in 12.30 seconds, annexed the 200-meters in 25.54 seconds and rolled to the win in the 400-meters in 57.60 seconds. She also was part of the relay teams that placed second in the 4 x 100-meters (50.00 seconds) and 4 x 400-meters (4:06.47).
St. John Fisher senior thrower Makenna King was named the 2024 Empire 8 Women's Outdoor Championship Field Athlete of the Meet. She won the E8 discus throw title for the third consecutive with a career-best throw of 45.65 meters. King was also second in the shot put with a toss of 13.34 meters and set a second career-best in the hammer throw, firing it 45.83 meters to place fourth overall.
Alfred’s Olivia Gilbert rolled to a win in the 800-meters for the second straight season, crossing the finish line in 2:17:47. She also ran the anchor leg in teaming with Zoe Rainville, Anne Spila, and Bianca Durso to take the 4 x 400-meter relay in 4:05.90. Spila earned the win in the heptathlon with a score of 4,213, while Durso earned runner-up honors.
Utica’s Jane Fahy won her third straight E8 title in the shot put with a meet-record toss of 14.50 meters. Teammate Hannah Allison took the high jump, clearing 1.57 meters, while Zeniyah Gholson won the triple jump with a leap of 11.36 meters. Utica’s Alyssa Youngs also earned the win in the 400-meter hurdles in 1:07.03.
Houghton’s Tabitha Clark won the 1,500-meters in a time of 4:57.53, while teammate Noelle Linenfelser won the 5,000-meters in 18:28.95.
Nazareth’s 4 x 100-meter relay squad of Alexis Lasher, Alaina Morley, Jasmine Kendrick, Sydney LaSalle opened Saturday’s action with a victory in 49.41 seconds. Samantha Luba of the Golden Flyers rallied in the final strides to take the 100-meter hurdles in 15.34 seconds.
