Empire 8 Announces 2024 Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Award Winners and All-Conference Selections

The Empire 8 Conference announced its 2024 Women’s Outdoor Track & Field All-Conference awards on Tuesday, June 4. The awards are voted on by the league's head coaches. Utica University earned three of the four individual honors.
 
Utica junior sprinter Mackenzie Mix was named the 2024 Empire 8 Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year. On May 4, Mix was named the 2024 Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championship Track Athlete of the Meet after sweeping all three sprint events and leading the Pioneers to runner-up honors in a pair of relays. Mix, a native of Camden, NY, took the 100-meter E8 Championship in 12.30 seconds, annexed the 200-meters in 25.54 seconds and rolled to the win in the 400-meters in 57.60 seconds. She earned USTFCCCA All-Region honors in the 100-meter dash and set a personal record in the 400-meters in her final race of 2024 with a time of 56.42 seconds. Mix, who was also the 2022 E8 Track Athlete and Rookie of the Year, is one of three E8 student-athletes to be named Track Athlete of the Year for a second time.
 
Utica graduate student Jane Fahy was named the 2024 Empire 8 Outdoor Field Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive season. Fahy, a native of Oriskany, NY, earned All-American honors in the shot put at the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship after finishing third overall (leading until the final round) with a throw of 14.65 meters. She also won the shot put at both the 2024 E8 Outdoor (third straight title, meet record throw of 14.50 meters) and All-Atlantic Region Championships this spring (second straight championship). In addition, Fahy placed second in the discus throw at the E8 Championship with a personal best throw of 40.54 meters. On April 26, Fahy broke her own Empire 8 record in the shot put with a throw of 14.77 meters (48.5’5”) Fahy is the fourth student-athlete in Empire 8 history to earn multiple Field Athlete of the Year honors.
 
Alyssa Youngs of Utica was named the 2024 Empire 8 Outdoor Rookie of the Year. Youngs, a native of Constableville, NY, won the Empire 8 Championship in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:07.03, while placing third in the 100-meter hurdles, fourth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump. She also helped the Pioneers place second in the 4 x 400-meter relay. In addition, Youngs ended the season by placing 11th in the heptathlon at the All-Atlantic Region Championships with a score of 3,742 points. is Utica’s fourth E8 Outdoor Track and Field Rookie of the Year, joining Mix (2022), Lauren DeLude (2012) and Jess Ciraulo (2011). 
 
Nazareth head coach James Goss and his staff of assistant coaches Mike Heymann, Zachary Ferrara, Patrick Healy, Doug Schneider, and Alexa Wandy was named the 2024 Empire 8 Coaching Staff of the Year for the second consecutive season. The Golden Flyers won their second consecutive Empire 8 Outdoor Track & Field Championship. Overall, Nazareth had 19 different student-athletes earn All-Conference honors and several All-Region honorees.
 
The Empire 8 first, second and third team all-conference selections were determined at the championship meet on May 3-4 from the Polisseni Track and Field Complex, hosted by St. John Fisher.
 
One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2024 Women's Outdoor Track & Field Sportswoman of the Year Team. The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen.
