PITTSFORD, NY - West No. 2 seed SUNY Oswego (11-3) rolled to a 5-1 win over West No. 1 seed Nazareth University (12-8) in the 2025 Empire 8 Men's Tennis Championship match from the Goilsano Training Center on the campus of Nazareth University on Saturday, May 2. Oswego receives an automatic berth into the 2025 NCAA Division III Men’s Tennis Championship, which begins May 9-11, with first, second and third round action.
Oswego rallied to win two of three doubles matches and took wins at first, second, and third singles to win its first Empire 8 Championship in its first season as a league member.
Empire 8 Tournament Most Valuable Player Matt Mannara of Oswego teamed with teammate Tony Marcano to rally from an early 4-0 deficit to defeat Griffin Bond and Max Funiciello of Nazareth, 8-6. The third doubles team of Austin Davis and Jose Miguel Garcia-Moreta earned an 8-5 win to give Oswego a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
Nazareth's second doubles team of Chris Benedict and Noah Britton earned its lone point of the day with an 8-5 win.
Marcano gave the Lakers a 3-1 lead with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Bond at first singles. Mannara made it 4-1 Lakers by defeating Funiciello in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0. Davis recorded the decisive point for the Lakers at third singles, 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 over Pierre Ntonga of Nazareth.
Today marked the third meeting of the season between the two schools. The two teams split a pair of regular season matches, with Nazareth earning a 6-3 win on home court and Oswego pulling out a 5-4 win on its home court.
Oswego began its postseason run with a 6-1 win over West No. 3 seed Houghton in opening round action on April 29 and defeated East No. 1 seed Thomas College, 7-2 yesterday from Nazareth.
