Alfred Advances to Empire 8 Men's Tennis Semifinals After Defeating SUNY Oswego, 4-0 in Opening Round

OLEAN, NY – The No. 2 West seeded Alfred University men's tennis team defeated No. 3 West seeded Oswego State team on Tuesday evening from the St. Bonaventure University indoor tennis courts, 4-0, advancing to the Semifinals of the Empire 8 Men's Tennis Championship Tournament.
 
The Saxons (13-5, 6-2 Empire 8) defeated the Lakers (3-8, 3-5 Empire 8) with three unfinished matches, taking the doubles point after two matches and the second, third and fourth points during singles play. The No. 2 doubles duo of Breece Erickson (Goshen, IN/) and André López Jiménez (Mexico City, Mexico/PrepaTec Esmeralda) picked up the first win with a 6-1 victory over Colin Byer and Zach Triantafillou. Ricardo Alvarez Janik (La Orotava, Spain/Colegio Casa Azul) and Anlun Zwerver (Koog Aan De Zaan, The Netherlands/Blaise Pascal College) captured the deciding doubles point with a win at No. 1 over Cole Lyons and Tyler Yhun.
 
In singles action, Erickson was the first to finish, picking up a 6-3, 6-2 No. 3 singles victory over Miguel Garcia. López Jiménez then closed out a 6-1, 6-1 victory over the Oswego No. 2 player, Byer. Although Alvarez Janik was closing in on a victory at No. 1, holding a 6-3, 4-1 lead over Lyons, it was his doubles partner, Zwerver at the No. 4 lineup spot who ended the match and advanced the Saxons in the Empire 8 playoffs. Zwerver defeated Yhun, 6-4, 6-2 to end the match.
 
The Saxons will next travel to Waterville, ME to face the No. 1 East seeded Thomas College on Friday, May 1 at 2:30pm in the E8 Semifinals. The winner will go on to face the winner of the No. 1 West seeded St. John Fisher University and No. 2 East seeded Norwich University matchup on Saturday, May 2 at 1:00pm from Thomas College.
