MEDFORD, MA – A season filled with no shortage of history for the St. John Fisher University men's tennis program came to an end on Friday with a 4-0 loss to The College of New Jersey (TCNJ) in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Tournament at Tufts University's Vouté Courts.
The Cardinals, who had been riding a program record 11-match winning streak entering their first-ever NCAA Tournament contest, finished the season 12-4 overall. They captured the first Empire 8 title in program history last weekend with wins over Norwich and Alfred in the conference's championship tournament.
St. John Fisher's 12 wins this season marked its most since the 2006 team won a program record 13 matches. Additionally, the Cardinals went undefeated (8-0) in Empire 8 regular-season play for the first time in program history.
"It was incredibly special to be here, especially for me and my fellow senior, Sean Brown," Will Chubb, who played in second doubles and second singles against TCNJ, said. "To be able to win our conference championship and make it here to the national sage, it means the world to me."
First-year head coach Jason Byam, the winningest men's tennis player in Fisher history, added, "It was a super special year. I am just super proud of our guys."
TCNJ (16-5), ranked No. 35 in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) DIII Poll, advanced to face Trinity (Texas) on Saturday in the second round.
The Lions claimed the doubles point with victories in first and second doubles before claiming the dual win with singles wins from Harrison Maitland-Carter (second singles), Faris Shehata (fourth singles) and Brett Schuster (sixth singles).
