Below are the Empire 8 Players of the Week, released on May 23, 2022, for games played from May 16-May 22. It is the 36th and final Empire 8 weekly honors release of the 2021-22 season. Sports featured include men’s and women’s outdoor track and field.
MEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Daijon Richards, Utica, So., Sprints, Mount Vernon, NY/Mount Vernon
Richards finished third in the 100-meter dash at the 2022 All-Atlantic Region Championships with a time of 10.77 seconds and was part of the 4 x 100-meter relay team that placed seventh overall in a time of 42.27 seconds. It is his second E8 weekly honor of the outdoor season.
CO-FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Hunter Logan, Utica, So., Throws, Fort Plain, NY/Fort Plain
Logan claimed the All-Atlantic Region Championship in the shot put last week while breaking the outdoor school record with a throw of 16.52 meters, which currently ranks sixth nationally. It is Logan’s third E8 weekly honor of the outdoor season.
CO-FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Kyle Rollins, St. John Fisher, Gr., Jumps, Groveland, NY/Geneseo
Rollins won both the triple jump and high jump at the All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Championships last week at Moravian College. He posted the top triple jump in the nation on day one to win the event, setting a new personal record at 15.11 meters. Rollins followed that up on Day two by winning the high jump by clearing a height of 2.05 meters. It is his second E8 weekly honor of the outdoor season.
WOMEN’S OUTDOOR TRACK AND FIELD
TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Samantha Shea, St. John Fisher, Sr., Sprints/Hurdles, North Tonawanda, NY/Starpoint
Shea ran the final leg of a school-record-setting 4x400-meter relay at the All-Atlantic Region Track & Field Conference Championships, helping the team place fifth with a time of 3:56.10, 1.29 seconds faster than the previous program record. She also finished 11th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.74 seconds.
FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK – Michaela Kurbs, St. John Fisher, So., Jumps, Lockport, NY/Lockport
Kurbs solidified her place at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships with her performance at the 2022 All-Atlantic Region Track and Field Conference Championships last week. She finished fourth in the long jump with a personal-record distance of 5.81 meters, which leapfrogged Kurbs from being just outside the cut for nationals into a tie for 12th in the nation. She also ran the 100-meter dash, placing 21st with a time of 12.66 seconds.
