GENEVA, OH - Two members of the Utica University track and field program shined during competition on Friday, May 27 at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships held at SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio.
Hunter Logan became a two-time NCAA All-American in the men's shot put with a third place finish. The first year Pioneer broke his own school record twice on his first two throws, going from 16.81 on his opening throw, to a 17.25 meter heave on his second throw that put him in the lead. That turned out to be the second-best throw in the opening round. Logan did not improve on his final three throws in the final round to finish with a final mark of 17.25 meters and third place. He tied the highest finish ever by a Utica athlete in any event at the national meet, and is the program's first outdoor men's shot put All-American.
Mackenzie Mix finished two spots ahead of her seeding in the women's 400 meters with a terrific 18th place effort in her inaugural NCAA Championships appearance. In the preliminary round of the 400, the freshman finished with a time of 57.53 while running against a 22 competitor national meet field.
Ka'Sean Watlington will chase Utica's first-ever NCAA title on Saturday in the finals of the men's triple jump. He enters as the second overall seed. That event will be contested at 11 a.m.
