Host Nazareth College holds a slim lead after day one of the 2022 Empire 8 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship at Golden Flyer Stadium on Friday, May 6. Nazareth has 73 points, just ahead of Utica University, who has 68 points and defending champion St. John Fisher College after eight of the 21 scored events.
Nazareth won three individual events, as Cade Eells kicked off the meet with a decisive win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase in a time of 9:41.52. Ben Lewis won the 400-meter dash in a time of 50.07 seconds, while Nathan Bowers outlasted teammate Matt Reimann to win the 10,000-meter run in a meet record time of 32:26.29.
Utica enjoyed a great day in the field events. Ka'Sean Watlington took the long jump with a top leap of 7.23 meters, while graduate student Chase Pecoraro won the pole vault for the second straight year, clearing 4.25 meters. Teammate Justin Swavely won the javelin throw with a toss of 55.22 meters.
Russell Sage junior John Coddington annexed the hammer throw with a toss of 45.93 meters.
The Golden Flyers' 4 x 800-meter relay team of Ethan Kenyon, Noah Engel, Patrick Healy and Josh Tomaka earned the victory in 8:08.40.
