Utica University Wins 2022 Empire 8 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship

Pioneers win third outdoor title in program history

Utica University rallied to win the 2022 Empire 8 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship from Golden Flyer Stadium on the campus of Nazareth College on May 6-7. The Piioneers finished with a team total of 194 points, winning their third team title in program history. by just five points over runner-up St. John Fisher. Host Nazareth placed third with 170 team points.
 
The Pioneers won eight individual/relay events overall over the two-day meet.
 
Nazareth junior distance runner Nathan Bowers of Nazareth was named the 2022 Empire 8 Outdoor Championship Track Athletes of the Meet. Bowers was victorious in both the 5,000- and 10,000-meter championships over the weekend. He set an Empire 8 Championship meet record in winning the grueling 10,000-meter event on Friday evening in a time of 32:26.29. He also crossed the finish line first in the 5,000-meters in 15:28.73.

Utica graduate student Ka'Sean Watlington was named Empire 8 Outdoor Field Athlete of the Meet after winning, the long jump and triple jump events, in addition to running the opening leg on Utica's winning 4x100-meter relay team. On Friday, Watlington won his second outdoor long jump title with a leap of 7.23 meters, second best in E8 Championship history. On Saturday, Watlington won his second E8 triple jump championship with a meet record leap of 15.10 meters, which is also the top triple jump in Division III to date this season.

Daijon Richards of Utica and Kyle Rollins of St. John Fisher were multiple event winners. Richards won both the 100-meters (10.73 seconds) and 200-meter (22.75 seconds) dashes, while teaming up to win the 4 x 100-meter relay in a time of 42.78 seconds. Rollins won the high jump for the fourth consecutive season, clearing 1.90 meters, while annexing the 110-meter hurdles in 14.91 seconds.
