2023 Empire 8 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship to Take Place May 5-6 at Utica

Host Utica will look to repeat as Empire 8 Champions

Alfred University, Hartwick College, Houghton University, Nazareth College, Russell Sage College, St. John Fisher University and Utica University will compete at the 2023 Empire 8 Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Friday, May 5 and Saturday, May 6 at the Pioneer Turf and Track and Field Complex on the campus of Utica. Action begins at 11:30 a.m. Friday and continues at 10 a.m. Saturday. Host Utica will look to repeat as Empire 8 Champions. Nazareth emerged victorious at the 2023 E8 Indoor Championships in February.

2023 Empire 8 Team Capsules (Order Based on 2022 Championship Finish)
 
Host Utica look to repeat as Empire 8 Champions in 2023. Sprinter Andrew Hadasz enters the meet as the top-seed in both the 100- and 200-meter events. Ethan Kain and Nolan Flynn are also expected to contend in the sprints, while Michael Roberts is a standout in both long distance events. Utica will also be well represented in the relay events, while Jonathan Simmons and TyJohn Billinger will look to score in the hurdles events. Zuriel Wright enters the meet ranked 46th nationally in the high jump. He is also the current E8 leader in the long jump and is ranked third in the triple jump. Billinger enters the E8 Championship ranked second in the triple jump and third in the long jump. Utica has an incredibly deep group of throwers, who will look to score several points, led by 2022 Indoor and Outdoor All-American Hunter Logan, who is currently ranked 16th nationally in the shot put. Justin Swavely is the current E8 leader, ranked 16th nationally in the javelin, while Antwan Kelly enters the meet ranked first in the conference in the discus and second in the hammer throw. Nathan Florian, Michael McNeil, Billie Mays III, Mark Brown and Jacob Barnes and Cole DeKing are among the current E8 leaders in several throwing events.
 
St. John Fisher is looking to regain the league title and earn its fourth overall championship in 2023. Sean Cochrane and Bryant DePaull form a potent 1-2 punch in the high jump, as both student-athletes are ranked in the top-50 nationally. Ivan Lopez-Testillano is ranked in the top-25 nationally in the triple jump. He is also second in the league in the long jump entering the championship meet. On the throws side, Brandon Kaplan is third among all E8 student-athletes in the hammer throw, while Bryce Grove is second in the javelin. Josiah Bowers and Maxwell Blowers will look to score points in the decathlon for the Cardinals. The Cardinals relay teams will look to score big points. John Ruggio is the two-time defending Empire 8 Champion in the 400-meter hurdles. Sprinters Brady Bishop and Curtis Cuvilly are top contenders in the 100-meters, while Cole Ferris is a standout in the 400-meters. Myles Andersen, Peter Briggs and Tony DiRubbo will look to score key points in the middle distance events, while Ethan Billings, Riley Nash and Brandon Nicosia are standouts in the distance events.
 
Nazareth is looking for its first Empire 8 outdoor track and field title after taking the E8 indoor championship in late February. The Golden Flyers enter the meet with a top-three league performer in every track event. Mike Welch is the E8 leader in the 400-meters and enters second in both the 100- and 200-meter dash events. Sophomore Ben Lewis and Jaylen Savage will also contend for top honors in the sprint events. Connor McCauslin and Aaron Lund are the top-two seeds in the 110-meter hurdles, while Lund is also second in the 400-meter hurdles and decathlon. Patrick Healy enters the weekend as the top performer in both the 800- and 1,500-meters, while Cade Eells is the current leader in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and is second in the 1,500-meters and third in the 5,000-meters.  are top contenders in the 800-meters. Senior Nathan Bowers is the top seed in the 5,000-meters and 10,000-meters and is the two-time defending E8 Champion in both events. Matt Reimann is also a top contenders in both distance events. Josh Pomerleau enters the championship as the top seed in the pole vault, leading a 1-2-3 contingent of Golden Flyers (Jack Pomykaj and Jason Bletsko). while Nicholas Read is seeded fifth. Adam Reifsteck and Ryan DeShane are Nazareth’s top contenders in the jumps, while Pomykaj enters the championship meet with the third best score in the decathlon.
 
Houghton will look to earn a top-three team finish. Malachi Yeager enters the meet with the best score among all Empire 8 student-athletes in the decathlon with 5,792 points. He also has top-10 performances in the long jump, pole vault, discus, javelin and high jump. The Highlanders have several distance runners who will look to score key points, including Caleb Kasper, Ben Allen and Zach Tucker. Kasper enters second in the 5,000-meters and third in the 10,000-meters. Amos Bixler, James Eustace and Tucker will also look to gain valuable points for the Highlanders in the middle distance events. Sprinters Evan Kurtz, Avery Belanger and Brennan Lewandowski can provide a spark for the Highlanders in the sprints and hurdles. Lewandowski is also a standout high jumper, while Belanger enters fourth in the triple jump. Gavin Luckey and Andrew Ryan are also expected to contend in the jumps.
 
Alfred enters the 2022 Empire 8 Championship looking to improve off of a fifth place finish in 2021. George Mecca enters the meet with the top time in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.96 seconds. Neil Peters, John Wendt and Steven Jackson in addition to Noam Sokolovsky will represent the Saxons in the sprint events. Finnegan Dean enters with the fifth best time in the 3,000-metere steeplechase. Alfred’s relay teams will be well represented at the championship meet as well. On the field side, Kenneth Berlin has the third best throw to date among all E8 student-athletes in the javelin, while Jason Crocker has top-five throws in both the shot put and discus. Andrew Parnapy will also look to score point for the Saxons in throwing events as well.
 
Russell Sage is looking to continue its ascent up the E8 rankings. Sophomore David Adadjo is contender in the sprint events, while Noah Rivera has the fifth best long jump in the Empire 8 currently (12.95 meters). John Coddington is a two-time Empire 8 Field Athlete of the Week this spring and currently leads all Empire 8 student-athletes in the hammer throw, is second in the shot put and fourth in the discus. He is the defending E8 Outdoor Champion in the hammer throw.
 
Hartwick will look to improve off of last year’s finish in 2023. Middle distance runner Courtney Rogers will look to score points for Hartwick in the 400- and 800-meters, while Patrick Conteh and Corey Quomony are standouts in the sprint events. On the field side, Quomony will compete in the long jump, while Robert Burns is a candidate in all throws events. He enters the meet eighth in the javelin.
