Nazareth takes 2023 Empire 8 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship for first time in Program History

Nazareth College won its first Empire 8 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship, holding off defending champion and host Utica University to win the 2023 team title from Pioneer Turf and Track and Field Complex on the Campus of Utica University on May 5-6. The Golden Flyers finished with 219 team points, nine ahead of the Pioneers. St. John Fisher University placed third with 119 points.
 
The Golden Flyers had eight individuals/relay teams win events and had several student-athletes earn personal records over the two-day meet.
 
Utica swept the individual awards, as junior Andy Hadasz was named the 2023 Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Championship Track Athlete of the Meet, while senior Zuriel Wright was named the Field Athlete of the Meet.
 
Hadasz had a clean sweep of all three sprint events. He won the 100-meter dash in a time of 11.08 seconds, 200-meter dash in 22.34 seconds and 400-meter dash in 49.83 seconds. Hadasz was also part of the winning 4 x 100-meter relay team that crossed the finish line first in 42.78 seconds and 4 x 400-meter relay team that placed third.
 
Wright won the high jump, clearing 1.99 meters, was second in the long jump with a leap of 6.75 meters and placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 13.29 meters. was also part of the winning 4 x 100-meter relay team that crossed the finish line first in 42.78 seconds.
 
Nazareth won five individual events and a relay Saturday to maintain its lead over the Pioneers. Patrick Healy won both the 800- and 1,500-meters on Saturday, while Cade Eells took the 5,000-meters for his second individual win of the weekend. Jack Pomykaj won the Empire 8’s first decathlon since 2007, with a score of 5,493 points.
 
The Golden Flyers sealed the win as the 4 x 400-meter relay team of Michael Puglisi, Ben Lewis, Gavin McAllister, Jaylen Savage emerged victorious.
 
Utica’s Hunter Logan won his second straight league title in the shot put with a toss of 15.92 meters. His teammate Antwan Kelly took the discuss for his second win of the weekend.
 
John Ruggio of St. John Fisher won the 400-meter hurdles title for the second straight year, while Ivan Lopez-Testillano annexed the triple jump.
