Nazareth leads after opening day of 2024 Empire 8 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Nazareth University leads after day one of the 2024 Empire 8 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship from the Polisseni Track and Field Complex on the campus of St. John Fisher University on Friday, May 3. Nazareth has 74 points, 16 points ahead of second-place Utica University, who has 58 points after eight of the 22 scored events.

Nazareth's Cade Eells kicked off the meet with a win in the 3,000-meter steeplechase for the third straight year in a time of 9:18.54 which is a new meet record, knocking 20 seconds off his winning time from last year.
 
St. John Fisher sophomore Brandon Kaplan smashed an Empire 8 meet record in the hammer throw with a toss of 55.82 meters.
 
Michael Puglisi of Nazareth earned the victory in the 400-meter dash in a time of 49.40. Nazareth’s 4 x 800-meter relay team of Joe Cataldo, Kenny Williams, Cole Hastings, Gavin McCallister earned the victory in 7:59.53.

Justin Swavely of Utica won the javelin throw for the third straight year with a toss of 56.85 meters.
 
Houghton University senior Caleb Kasper used a strong last 1,200 meters to win the 10,000-meter run for the second straight season by 15 seconds in a time of 34:00.38.
 
Alfred University  first-year standout Zion Baitey emerged victorious in the long jump with a leap of 6.85 meters. St. John Fisher freshman Hayden Penna took the pole vault, clearing 4.60 meters.

Nazareth's Jack Pomykaj leads the decathlon after five events with a score of 3,125 points. He won two of the five events and was second in the other three on Friday.
