Several Empire 8 Meet Records Set on Day One of the 2026 Empire 8 Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championships

Several Championship meet records were shattered on day one of the 2026 Empire 8 Men’s Outdoor Track and Field Championship from the Polisseni Track and Field Complex on the campus of St. John Fisher University on Friday, May 1. Nationally-ranked SUNY Geneseo has 104 points, while SUNY Brockport is second with 77 points after eight of the 22 scored events.
 
SUNY Geneseo junior Pierce Young began the meet by shattering an Empire 8 Championship record in the 3,000-meters, outlasting 2025 Champion, Emerson Comer also of SUNY Geneseo and Bennett Melita of Utica University. Young won the race in a time of 8:58.96, while Comer finished in 9:01.76 and Melita finished in 9:04.22. Young moved into the top-10 nationally in the event.

St. John Fisher senior Brandon Kaplan won the hammer throw for the third straight season with a toss of 59.57 meters. Kaplan is currently in the top-10 nationally in the event.

Jacob Miller of Geneseo, who entered the E8 Championship with the top time nationally in Division III, won the 400-meter dash for the second straight season in a time of 47.81 seconds. 
 
Gabriel Giannini of SUNY Brockport won the pole vault with a leap of 4.89 meters, just shy of  E8 Championship record mark of 4.90 meters, set originally NCAA National Runner-up Mike Dempsey of RIT in 2010 and equaled by Hayden Penna of St. John Fisher last season. Penna was the runner-up behind Giannini in 2026.
 
Utica University first-year standout Wayne Spencer won the E8 long jump championship with a Championship record leap of 7.29 meters which moved into the top-15 nationally.

Jared Smith of SUNY Brockport, annexed the 10,000-meter run by nearly 20 seconds in a E8 Championship record time of 31:00.92. He shattered the previous E8 mark by 90 seconds.
  
SUNY Brockport’s 4 x 800-meter relay team of Frank Calhoun, Bayden Maloney, Eduardo Salinas, Tim Smith won in a meet record time of 7:54.11. Allen Reome of SUNY Brockport won the javelin throw, firing it 47.43 meters.

Daniel Pagan of SUNY Geneseo leads the decathlon with 3,453 points with five of the 10 events completed. He was the top finisher in the 100-meters, high jump and 400-meters. Dylan Lawless of Russell Sage won the long jump in the decathlon and London Premo of St. John Fisher won the shot put on Friday.
 
Day two action gets underway from St. John Fisher at 10 a.m. Saturday.
